The Clifton neighborhood began in the mid-1800's and maintained steady growth into the early 20th century. It is a community full of various businesses and types of people. Frankfort Avenue, formerly the Louisville-Lexington Toll Pike, runs roughly WNW to ESE through the center of the neighborhood and has always been its primary commercial thoroughfare. As many other urban neighborhoods, Clifton experienced some decline after World War II as suburban neighborhoods spread to the South and East of Louisville. However, many residents remained faithful to their home, and others found Clifton's afforability and walkability a fine opportunity for a new home.
More than 30 years ago, artists and other young entrepreneurs moved into some of the commercial buildings in the 2000 Block of Frankfort Avenue and ended up forging a revitalization of Clifton and the Louisville Arts scene. Over the last 20 years, many more business owners and residents have relocated to Frankfort Avenue as similar commercial districts on Bardstown Rd and Baxter Ave attracted more national chains and higher rents. Moving West down Frankfort from Ewing, (except for the Walgreens on the first corner) every business is locally owned and operated.
The 2000 Block has the highest concentration of retail in Clifton. But it is also home to five restaurants and several other businesses, including The Clifton Dentist. We enjoy support from our local residents and visitors from all over Louisville, Kentucky and beyond. Many of our shops take pride in our local history and artistic resurgence and are committed to promoting Louisville talent, art and products.
